Building a Portfolio That Stands Out
Lessons learned from designing and building a minimal, text-focused portfolio from scratch.
Building a Portfolio That Stands Out
When I set out to build my portfolio, I had one rule: let the work speak for itself. No flashy gradients, no 3D animations, no distractions. Just black, white, and words.
The Case for Minimalism
In a world of over-designed portfolios with parallax scrolling and particle effects, simplicity is the real differentiator. When everything is loud, quiet becomes remarkable.
A black background with white text creates immediate focus. There’s nowhere to hide — every word needs to earn its place on the page.
Typography Is Everything
When your entire design palette is two colors, typography becomes your primary design tool. I chose Space Grotesk for headings — its geometric forms feel modern and technical. For body text, Inter provides exceptional readability at any size.
The combination creates a clear visual hierarchy without relying on color or decoration.
Design Decisions
- No images on the homepage — forces the content to be compelling on its own
- Generous whitespace — gives each element room to breathe
- Subtle animations — just enough to feel alive, not enough to distract
- Vertical navigation — saves horizontal space and creates a unique layout
What I Learned
The constraint of working with only black and white pushed me to focus on what actually matters: content structure, typography, and thoughtful spacing. These are the fundamentals that make any design work, regardless of the color palette.
Sometimes the best design decision is what you choose to leave out.
